Hint 6 – beware your section modulus
Ever had a prick in the finger from a spike from wire rigging? That’s a sign of the wire reducing in modulus section. (i.e. the diameter of wire taking the working load) All the modern rigging rope such as Technora, Dynex, and Spectra etc is (despite some club house wisdom) UV stable.
Section modulus is thing to watch for in running and standing exotic rigging. Breaks, overloading “fuzzing” and any signs of the section being compromised and are signs it’s time to replace the rope. Because exotic fibre rigging is so light and small in diameter compared to traditional alternatives sailors commonly go up a spec as there is very little weight penalty. The down side is people often then forget that preventative checks are still important.
Just because it hasn’t fallen over or broken so far doesn’t mean it won’t!
